PRIDE: MOTIVATION

SACRIFICE
  • If you don't invest very much, then defeat doesn't hurt very much, and winning is not very exciting.
  • I'd rather have preparation than motivation.
  • Everyone likes to play and no one likes to practice.
  • The time will come when winter will ask what you were doing all summer.
  • The trouble with opportunity is that it always comes disguised as hard work.

  • COURAGE
  • Some men see things as they are and ask "why"; others see things as they are and ask "why not".
  • One man with courage makes a majority.
  • All glory comes from daring to begin.
  • Take a chance! All life is a chance!
  • The man who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.
  • The sure-thing boat never gets far from shore.

  • FAITH
  • Your life is your gift from God...what you do with your life is your gift to God.
  • Because God delays does not mean that God denies.

  • DETERMINATION
  • If you can perceive it and you can believe it, you can achieve it.
  • People seldom walk over you until you lie down.

  • CHARACTER
  • It is better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you are not.
  • Sometimes it's more important to discover what one cannot do, than what one can do.
  • If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

  • HARD WORKk
  • Where I smell no sweat - I see no virtue.

  • HONESTY
  • Truth has no special time of its own. Its hour is now--always.
  • A man who's committed a mistake & doesn't correct it, is committing another mistake.

  • GOALS
  • Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I will show you a failure." - Thomas Edison

  • HANDLING ADVERSITY
  • Don't be afraid to fail.
  • Experience is just a mistake you won't make anymore.

  • WINNING
  • If it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, but how you play the game...why do they keep score?
  • "Nobody likes to lose - just stay away from those who don't mind losing." - Joe Garagiola
  • Success comes in 'cans,' not 'cannots.'

  • MORE IMPORTANT THAN WINNING
  • If you want peace, work for justice.
  • There is no such thing as perfect people, only perfect intentions.
  • Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity. They seem more afraid of life than of death.
  •   One of our cross-country traditions is the keeping and passing down of the “cross-country prayer”.

The runner who first made the prayer was former Captain Rudy Gomez (Redeemer grad class of 1994). Rudy was an outstanding runner who was one of the earlier builders of the program’s current success now enjoyed at Cesar Chavez. Because of the intense stress of being an “All-State” runner and a captain, Rudy developed a secret prayer he would say to himself before every race. Rudy handed the prayer down when he graduated to a truly great captain in cross-county history: Paul Brown. Paul in turn passed it down and the prayer still exists today in the hands of a current Cesar Chavez runner.

The prayer's exact contents are secret and it is said that if the coaching staff ever learns the content of the prayer that the prayer will lose it’s magic. Is it a prayer to be saved from tough coaches? A prayer for victory? A prayer that the team will do well?

While the prayer has many twists and turns in the pass-down, the most unusual twist occurred in 2000 when Aaron “Aztec” Romero passed down the prayer to Danny Sandoval. Mid-season Danny decided to play football and the cross-country team decided that was a great idea for us too. Aaron Romero came back from going to school in East Lansing to pass the prayer down once again – this time to Joey Glorso.

The prayer continues to this day! Only the prayer holders know for sure what is in the prayer and the prayer has been passed down as follows:

    1. Rudy Gomez ’94 to Paul Brown ’95
    2. Paul Brown ’95 to Tony Galvan ’96
    3. Tony Galvan ’96 to David Gonzalez ’97
    4. David Gonzalez ’97 to Noe Garcia ’99
    5. Noe Garcia ’99 to Aaron Romero ’00
6a. Aaron Romero ’00 to Danny Sandoval ’02
6b. Special retransfer of prayer by Aaron Romero to Joey Glorso ’02 mid season
    7. Joey Glorso ’02 to David Romero ’05
    8. David Romero ’05 to David Dominguez ’06
    9. Dave Dominguez '06 to Eddie Baldwin '08
